            Ai Film Festival

The Ai Film Festival was the theatrical screening event celebrating students from the Digital Film program at the Art Institute of CA-SF. That program is no more, but the students who came through continue to shine in the world.

Mission: The Digital Film and Video Production program at the Art Institute of California - San Francisco is dedicated to the discovery and development of independent filmmakers. The institute seeks to support, inspire and create tomorrow's moving image artists.

Charles S. Cohen’s Cohen Media Group Buys Landmark Theatres

We can all use some good news, especially now as our film program closes its doors for good at the end of 2018. Students who screened their films at any of the Landmark Theaters (Embarcadero, Opera Plaza) over the years can be confident that independent cinema lives on. News of Landmark's sale to CMG means art house, foreign, and indie film will thrive in the years to come. Let's all make it our goal to get our films made and seen. Who's with me?

CMG mogul Charles S. Cohen has shown a recurring interest in theatrical investments.

Next on our senior spotlight is ESAU GUTIERREZ, director of the film "TAMPERING WITH FATE."

Esau’s inspiration for his film came from a more heartfelt perception of death. He sees Death as a beautiful terror. In general, we fear death because we don’t know what comes after death. Esau sees a death as a part of nature and comes hand in hand with life. “We are born and then we die, but it’s a beautiful process because I believe that the after life is sublime. There is nothing without the other. I tried to incorporate that concept in the film.”

Esau faced so many challenges during his film throughout the process. This includes perfecting the script, scene adjustments, time scheduling, budgeting, and cast and crew management. Throughout the ride, Esau has had to manage every problem as it had arisen, and all of them were overcome.

The premise of the story is just this: There will always be Death in order to make room for Life.It is inevitable but should not be seen as a tragedy. A father may die but his father may live on to become a stronger man. Esau strives to have his audiences walk away from this film with that understanding.

FUN FACT: Esau’s strange fascination with Death began literally at birth; he was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck and was close to death as soon as his life began. A strong Christian, Esau was taught the bible and has a strong belief in God, which gives him more of a fascination for the afterlife.

Come meet Esau, and the rest of our seniors at the FREE screening on June 20 at the Delancey Street Screening Room at 1pm. #AiFilmFest

Next up on our spotlight is PHILLIP VIELMA, Director of the film "JIMMY"

Phillip’s film began as a short he wrote in 2012. He was encouraged by his creative writing teacher to develop the story into a script, and he did so by breaking down the story and characters. His childhood was his biggest inspiration, particularly with the characters, and “the way bullying was the norm in small town environment in the 80’s and all the closed minds
            that came with it.”

Challenges with this film stated with Phillip taking the story apart and making it into a good script. During production, Phillip had to ensure that he kept the crew well rested and fed, as there were nights when they shot late and long hours! Then in post-production, he learned that good editor has to know the story and put himself into it and must take special time with it. Post audio was enjoyable for Phillip. All the actors redid their lines and it has helped out immensely in bringing out their performances. On the set with time restrictions, some actors lost the opportunity to warm up for a scene, so any flat takes or unusable audio was resolved in a audio dialogue recording session.

Phillip wants to bring his audience to a much simpler time, and shed light on mental and verbal bullying abuse in a environment that people can relate to; maybe from their childhood. This is the kind of healing he hopes his audience will see and feel. He also plans to make a few people laugh!

FUN FACTS: Phillip has been writing poetry and lyrics since the fifth grade! He wants to give back as an artist. Everything he does is for his daughter and family!

Come meet Phillip, and the rest of our seniors at the FREE screening on June 20 at the Delancey Street Screening Room at 1pm. #AiFilmFest

Next up on our senior spotlight is JOSH BAIZE, producer and director of the film "INSIDE."

As a child of divorced parents, Josh was raised how to approach women in different ways. In his film “Inside,” Josh embodied that idea within the characters of his film. In addition, Josh loves to make people laugh and he creates for the entertainment.

As the writer of his film, Josh wanted to ensure there was comedy in this film without being offensive. His intention was to put his humor, not his opinion in the film. This can be challenging to do without offending someone.

Josh hopes that audiences will watch his film and relate to it in a sense that we are all sort of crazy.

FUN FACT: “Inside” was filmed in seven days over the course of three months. The entire film contained three crew members; one whom was acting in the film.

Come meet Josh, and the rest of our seniors at the FREE screening on June 20 at the Delancey Street Screening Room at 1pm. #AiFilmFest

            Ai Film Festival

With our screening only 17 days away, we are thrilled to introduce SEAN MARCHETTI, director of the film TURNING THE CORNER.

For this film, family and friends were a strong inspiration for Sean. With all the stories he has heard throughout the years, his goal was to put together something relatable to a lot of people in the audience. His short stories were modified for cinema.

With a large cast and locations in his short film, Sean’s obstacles were gathering cast, crew, and locations. He was fortunate enough to not encounter too many challenges, however his audio team had a great deal of work to get through in post production.

Upon viewing his film, Sean hopes everyone in the audience has at least one moment in his film where someone can relate on a personal level. He strived to make a movie based on real life, and he hopes audiences can walk away feeling this way.

FUN FACT: Sean comes from a large family, including six siblings. Before attending film school, Sean was a member of a hip hop group called “The 鑫鼎彩票代理注册.”
